I loved these two books by Judith L. Herman, MD. In clear and simple language, she lays out what all trauma survivors want. This is a much-simplified list, but is a good starting point...
1. To be listened to with an open mind, with care and compassion rather than skepticism and scorn.
2. Admission that a wrong has been done to them, period, with no hint of blame.
3. They want the truth to be known.
4. Recognition of their humanity.
5. Acknowledgement of the harm done to them.
6. For bystanders to take a stand and unequivocally denounce the wrong.
7. And while they yearn for an apology, they know a real one is rarely possible.
I hope to be part of the healing process with my memoir,
A Memoir of a Stolen Childhood will be published June 25, 2024.
